Dr Mpho Phalatse (born November 7, 1977) is a 45-year-old medical doctor and politician. The prominent personality has served her country and humanity through several positions.
Phalatse served Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality under the political party, Democratic Alliance.
The political juggernaut became the Mayor-elect on November 22, 2021. She is the first black woman to serve in this capacity.
The highly-capacitated woman served as a member of the Mayoral Committee in Joburg for Health and Social Development.

Early Life
Mpho Phalatse was born in Hebron, Pretoria, on November 7, 1977. She grew up under the care of her grandmother in Hebron. Later she joined her parents in Mabopane, a residential suburb in South Africa.
Her father and mother are teachers and put her through her academic journey.
Education
Dr Mpho attended primary and secondary schools in South Africa. After matriculation in 1994, she gained admission to study Chemical Engineering at Wits University.
In her second year of study, she enrolled at Sefako Makgatho University and MEDUNSA. She graduated with an MBChB and qualified as a doctor in 2005. Phalatse interned at Tembisa Hospital.
Phalatse also enrolled in Project Management Studies at Cranefield College. She holds an advanced diploma and postgraduate diploma in Project Management and Programme Management.
Career
Health
Phalatse is a Certified Independent Medical Examiner with the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. She worked as a causality officer at the Alexandra Community Health.
At Far East Rand Hospital, she was a sexual assault care practitioner. The politician was a member of the Professional Conduct Committee of the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
Politics
Mpho Phalatse is a member of the Democratic Alliance, the official opposition to the ANC. After the 2016 elections, she became a member of the Johannesburg City council.
Later, she became part of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development.
Later in June 2018, the political personality was reportedly suspended for saying the city and herself were now friends of Israel.
The suspension lasted for fourteen days, after which she returned to work. She was on the Mayoral Committee until November 2019. In 2019.
Phalatse was the party’s candidate for Joburg Local Government elections. They held the election on November 1, 2021.
On November 22, 2021, after the first council meeting, she emerged as the winner and the first black female mayor in the city’s history. She received a total of 144 votes out of 265.
The city council voted in Thapelo Amad of the Al Jama-ah party to replace mayor Mpho Phalatse in January 2023 after the outgoing major got a no-confidence vote earlier in the same week.
Mpho had faced the third no-confidence vote since September. The first time was after her coalition crumbled, but the court reinstated her.
In 2021, she became the first Black woman to lead Johannesburg.
Personal Life
Dr Mpho Phalatse is a mother of three children. Though, she has not disclosed the names of her spouse and children to The Saga. During leisure time, she would take a walk, meditate, take long drives, or go hiking.
The renowned politician loves to eat chicken livers, brown pap, and garlic prawn. Mpho also enjoys reading the Holy Bible and listening to Ella Fitzgerald.
