Biography

Nozizwe Mulela-Zulu (March 22, 1976) is the second wife of King Misuzulu KaZwelithini of the Zulu Nation. She is the current managing director of Eswatini Development and Savings Bank.

She started as a candidate attorney in a leading law firm. Eventually, she joined Standard Bank of Eswatini.

Early Life

Nozizwe Pearl Mulela-Zulu was born on March 22, 1976, to a Zambian father and a Swati mother. 

Her mother, late Professor Lydia Makhubu, was the first LiSwati to get a Ph.D. She was also the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Swaziland, now the University of Eswatini.

Her mother and maternal grandmother raised her in the Usuthu mission in the village of Luyengo in Swaziland. 

At six, she started school at Sydney Williams Primary in Manzini. She would visit their grocery shop to play with her cousins.

Her family is deep-rooted in Christianity and is staunch Anglican.

Education

Nozizwe studied at St Michael’s Girls High School. While in high school, she was part of the school’s netball team as the captain and was also a prefect.

After matric, she wanted to be a doctor, and her family’s work in the sciences influenced her. She studied sciences in her first year in school but failed. So she diverted her interest to law.

After graduation, she enrolled for a Bachelor of Arts in Law at the National University of Lesotho.

After obtaining her first degree, she studied for a Bachelor of Laws at the prestigious Rhodes University. Her love for learning made her return to school for more certificates.

She holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Stellenbosch Business School. She also graduated from the University of Stellenbosch Business School with a Master’s in Business Administration.

Career

After graduating, she became a Candidate Attorney in a leading law firm in Eswatini – Robinson Bertram Attorneys. Eventually, she became a Practicing Attorney.

Mulela-Zulu practiced for some years before becoming the Company Secretary and Legal Advisor at Standard Bank of Eswatini.

Later, she switched to being the Relationship Manager at Standard Bank. She joined Eswatini Bank in 2012 as the executive manager for corporate business.

Nozizwe has also worked at First National Bank Eswatini. She was the Executive Head of Commercial Banking and later appointed Managing Director of Eswatini Bank.

She has worked as a part-time law lecturer at the University Of Eswatini. She bagged the 2015 Business Woman of the Year Award under the corporate category.

  • board member of Junior Achievement Eswatini

Philanthropy

Nozizwe Mulela-Zulu is also a philanthropist and gives back to society. 

She served as a board member of Junior Achievement Eswatini. The organization educates students on entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

Nozizwe is passionate about women and youth empowerment and an advocate for education.

Personal Life

Queen Nozizwe Mulela-Zulu is part of the royal Zulu Family. Her husband, His Majesty, King Misuzulu Sinqobile ka Zwelithini-Zulu, is the reigning King of the Zulu Nation. She is his second wife.

The couple met in Swaziland a decade earlier before their marriage. She met the King through one of his relatives, a family friend.

During her leisure time, the queen enjoys long-distance running. She reads self-help and development books and loves gardening.

Queen Nozizwe once ran the Comrades Marathon. She goes to the Anglican church on Sundays.
