Early Life

Mandisa Jakavulu was born on January 5, 2000, in Pretoria, the capital city of South Africa, while her mother was on holiday.

Jakavulu and her mother returned to Butterworth in Eastern Cape, where she grew up and attended primary school and college.

Growing up in the Eastern Cape, she learned and mastered Xhosa with the help of her family.

From a young age, she also learned Tswana and S’pitori during her visits to Pretoria’s Atteridgeville township during holidays. She heard the language in the streets.

Education

Jakavula had her first few years of school at Bethel College. She moved to Pretoria for grades 4 to 8 and completed grades 9 to 10 at Butterworth.

Mandisa completed grade 11 and matric in 2017 at Queens Private School in Pretoria and studied PR at Rosebank College.

After losing her stepfather, she battled depression which impacted her studies. She dropped out in late 2018.

After getting herself together, she returned to school. In June 2019, she enrolled to study part-time for a BA in psychology at the University of South Africa.

Career

The 2020 Covid-19 national lockdown strengthened her social presence, and she rose to stardom on TikTok.

Her initial plan was to make dance videos and join the trending challenges like any other TikTok user.

After being on the platform for two years, she shared her first cooking videos with a S’pitori voice-over. She noticed her views increased, even though she did the video out of boredom.

Jakavulu started posting cooking videos in the vernacular, and her views continued to soar. Eventually, she realized that the language gained those views.

Mandz Not Hot started making day-in-the-life videos and dropped cooking videos.

The fame came with brand digital marketing opportunities for Mandisa. According to HeraldLIVE, the social media star’s eyes are on some top South African brands like Maxhosa by Laduma and GalxBoy.

Personal Life

Jakavula was earlier diagnosed with chronic depression, anxiety, and PTSD. For her being famous wasn’t as easy as it seems. She struggled to enjoy things like photoshoots because she didn’t feel what she was supposed to feel.

After her father’s demise, she also suffered depression, which affected her studies.
