Sonwabise Rungqu (born 24 May 1983), aka Soso Rungqu, is a 39-year-old South African actress and singer. She is best known for playing the welder Morongwa on Isidingo in 2016.

The role gained prominence and is her “largest role” to date. She has also appeared in many productions and commercials.

Sonwabise appeared in theatre, corporate theatre, industrial theatre, and corporate video.

Soso has also featured in short films like Awakening in 2014 and Beneath the Art in 2015. She is also a voice artist and voiced a role on the TruFM radio drama uHambolwethu.

Early Life

Sonwabise Soso Rungqu was born on 24 May 1983 in Amalinda, East London, South Africa. She grew up and studied in primary and secondary schools in South Africa. Sadly in 2015, her father died.

Education

Rungqu had her matric at Clarendon High School for Girls in 1991. She is a graduate of Performance Art in Musical Theatre at the Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria. She also did informal training in acting at underprivileged schools. 

Career

Rungqu made her theatre debut in the play The Frog Prince and other stories in 2007, performed at the Civic Theatre. Soso voiced the character Smartycat on the kids’ show Cool Catz for two years.

Soso has also performed in theater for high schools and primary schools. For some years, Soso worked with the department of Arts and Culture for a few years.

Sonwabise’s maiden TV role came in Ph.D. Child Case studies for the Mindset Network Health channel. She landed cameo roles on many TV shows – Scandal!, Mzansi Love, 7de Laan, Rhythm City, and Sokhulu & Partners.

Soso appeared in the TV series HeartLaughs and was part of the cast members of the short film Awaken. In 2015, she appeared in Beneath the Art.

In 2015, she voiced a role on the radio drama uHambolwethu broadcast on TruFM. She landed her “largest role” so far the following year. She appeared as Kau Morongwa on the soap opera Isidingo in 2016.

After appearing for a few seasons, she had to leave the show to look after her father, who was sick.
