Thulani Mtsweni (born July 31, 1968), fondly called Kaka, is a South African actor. He is best known for playing Bongani in the Mzansi Magic telenovela Gomora and Sibiya in the SABC3 series Isibaya.

After his debut in 2015, the talented actor appeared in many television and stage productions. He played Malusi Buthelezi in Hush Money and Nyoka in iNumber Number.

With many performances under his belt, he has become one of the country’s most seasoned actors. He left his role in Isibaya for another in Gomora in October 2020.

Early Life

Thulani Mtsweni was born on July 31, 1978, in Tsakane township, close to Johannesburg. He is fondly addressed as Kaka and comes from a humble beginning.

His love for theatre started in primary school. Since he could not speak English well, he was not selected to join in class plays.

Thulani did not give up. He and his would do adverts anytime there was a gap. He stayed with his aunty since it was closer to school. 

One day, a friend told him they were doing theatre. He had little knowledge of theatre, so he asked my aunt if he could move back home to Tsakane. His father’s house was closer to the community hall, where they practiced.

Eventually, he joined, and his first performance was at the Market Theatre in 2001. Mtsweni told a publication that if he had the chance to change the industry, he would replace beauty with talent.

Career

Television

At the beginning of his career in the entertainment industry, Thulani worked with many student producers. He played Shadrack Bhekiziswe Sibiya in the SABC3 soap opera Isibaya.

After an impressive performance on the show, viewers loved and talked about his role. He became famous for the character he played in Isibaya.

In 2017, Thulanui began to play Nyoka in the Mzansi Magic drama series iNumber Number. He appeared in the E.tv soap opera as Rhythm City Gedleyihlekisa. He joined the cast of Mzansi Magic telenovela Gomora as Bongani.

Mtsweni joined the telenovela Isibaya as the younger brother of Mpiyakhe Zungu, Mpihlangene Zungu, in 2020. One of his known roles is in Isidingo, where he played Shadrack Bhekiziswe Sibiya in Isidingo.

The actor bagged a role in another Mzansi Magic Telenovela, Gomora, and left after two years. He has appeared in many videos by Nkabi Chronicles and dances in these videos.

In 2020, Thulani Mtsweni and Nasiphi Ntabeni were nominated as Outstanding Couple for their roles in Isidingo at the fourth Royalty Soapie Awards. 

Theatre

Thulani started his career in theatre in 2001. After seventeen years, he got his first TV break as a cast of Isidingo: The Need.

The seasoned actor appeared in the anti-apartheid South African satirical play Woza Albert!, written by Dr Mbongeni Ngema, Percy Mtwa, and Barney Simon, at the Joburg Theatre until March 12. 

Mtsweni acted alongside the award-winning actor Hamilton Dlamini.
