Mayihlome Tshwete was born on December 10, 1982, to anti-Apartheid activists Steve Tshwete and Pamela MaMzangwa.
His father and mother played unforgettable roles in opposing the Apartheid regime. His father was a member of the ruling party, the African National Congress, of which he is a member.
Mayihlome joined South African politics following in the footsteps of his parents. He is the oldest of three with a younger brother Lindela Tshwete and a younger sister Yonda Tshwete.
His father had a close relationship with former president Nelson Mandela. They built the relationship after being locked up in Robben Island prison during the apartheid era.
In 2002, his father Steve Tshwete died, and Nelson Mandela sponsored his education. His mother Pamela Tshwete is active in South African politics. She serves as the current Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation in South Africa.

The duo is blessed with a son named after Mayihlonme’s father Vukile. He is also known for his comments against xenophobia inSouth Africa.
