Edward Mothibi (born November 10, 1984) is a 38-year-old athlete. He has participated in endurance races and long-distance races in the past.

Mothibi lifted the Comrades Marathon trophy in June 2019 after finishing as a winner of the men’s race. That was the first time he won the race.

Early Life

Edward Mothibi was born on November 10, 1984, in South Africa. He hails from the rural village of Magoegoe in Mahikeng, the North West, South Africa.

Career

Mothibi entered the 2019 Comrades Marathon and finished the race in 5:31:33. He defeated the 2018 winner Bongmusa Mthembu by seconds.

The race could not hold in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, making it the first time canceling the race since the second World War.

Apart from running, Edward works at Impala Platinum mine in Rustenburg. He is a permanent clerk in the instrumentation engineering department.

The endurance runner says he applied for the government Covid-19 relief fund through his running club. Though, he wishes the government to give the money to athletes who need it more than he does.

Mothibi is a full-time employee of Entsika Consulting and works as an events administrator at their Centurion office. 

Edward Mothibi entered the 2022 edition of the Comrades Marathon but couldn’t win the competition. Tete Dijana won the Marathon. 

2019 Comrades Marathon

Edward Mothibi won the 94th Comrades Marathon on June 9, 2019, in Durban, South Africa. 

The run started from Durban and ended in Pietermaritzburg. The runner finished the race in 5 hours, 31 minutes, and 33 seconds.

The runner defeated the defending champion and runner, Bong’musa Mthembu, who finished 5 hours, 31 minutes 58 seconds. After the race, Edward admitted that Mthembu was a difficult opponent.

Edward Mothibi is a father of three and hails from the rural village of Magoegoe in Mahikeng.
